Dr. Mosharraf Hossain is a Lecturer in Finance in the Department of Accounting and Finance at the UWA Business School, The University of Western Australia. He earned his PhD in finance from the University of Western Australia in 2016. His doctoral thesis, titled "A study of acquiring firm returns around merger and acquisition (M&A) announcements with a focus on multiple acquisitions and director trading," was supervised by Richard Heaney, Jing Yu, Frank Liu, and SzeKee Koh. The thesis examined stock market reactions to M&A announcements, finding more positive responses to single acquirers than multiple acquirers, stronger reactions to first deals by multiple acquirers, and positive reactions when directors did not trade prior to announcements. Hossain's research specializes in corporate finance, corporate governance, and sustainable finance, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, director trading, board monitoring, CEO incentives, corporate environmental performance, reputational costs, and green finance.
Hossain has published in leading international refereed journals such as the International Review of Financial Analysis, Business Strategy and the Environment, International Journal of Managerial Finance, and British Accounting Review. Key publications include "The performance and motivation of serial acquisitions: Evidence from Australia" (2021, International Review of Financial Analysis, with M. D. Pham and N. Islam), "Are board monitoring and CEO incentives substitutes for each other? Evidence from Australian market reaction to acquisition announcements" (2022, International Review of Financial Analysis, with M. Agha), "The reputational costs of corporate environmental underperformance: evidence from China" (2024, Business Strategy and the Environment, with L. Wang and J. Yu), "Green finance when stakeholders’ interests collide with each other: The case of Bangladesh" (2024, International Journal of Managerial Finance, with M. Agha and M. S. Chong), and "The information content of director trading: evidence from acquisition announcements in Australia" (2020, Global Finance Journal, with R. Heaney and J. Yu). For his teaching excellence, he received the UWA Business School Excellence in Teaching Award in 2017 and 2019, with nominations for seven consecutive years, and the University Postgraduate Award in 2014.
