Position: Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology

Effective Date: August 17, 2026 (Fall Semester)

Salary Range: The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary is $74,652 to $158,688 per year; $6,221 - $13,224/month. The anticipated hiring range is $80,000 to $95,000/per year; $6,667 - $7,917/month for the Assistant Professor level. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Department of Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling (ASEC)

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in counseling psychology or clinical psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited program. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2026.
  • Demonstrated experience providing counseling and/or mental health services, especially in culturally responsive ways that serve a racially, linguistically and socioeconomically diverse clientele.
  • Demonstrated potential for, or existing record of, published scholarship and an ongoing program of research in a clinically-relevant domain.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socio-economic and first-generation students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current license as a psychologist in the State of California.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: specific empirically supported therapeutic models, child therapy, family focused treatment, couples therapy, psychological assessment, pharmacology, advocacy, telehealth/online therapeutic services, neuropsychology.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching counseling or clinical psychology courses at the graduate level.
  • Demonstrated experience as a clinical supervisor.
  • Demonstrated experience advising students on research projects and theses.
  • Demonstrated potential for obtaining external funding for counseling or clinical psychology research projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with program coordination, such as managing practicum placements, course scheduling, etc.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness or potential to contribute to the College of Education's focus on equity in urban education.
  • Experience successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting students using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom.

Duties:

  • Teach a range of courses in counseling psychology, such as counseling techniques, diagnosis and psychological assessment, substance abuse, counseling theories, couples therapy, trauma and grief, career counseling, family systems theories and assessment, etc. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
  • Develop and maintain active research, scholarly, and creative activities related to counseling or clinical psychology.
  • Provide supervision to students in clinical practice.
  • Actively engage in program-related service activities such as program coordination, student advising at the master's level and doctoral level, chairing and serving on thesis committees.
  • Participate in faculty governance at the department, college, university, and community levels.
