Chair, Department of Cell Biology

The University of Virginia School of Medicine, in partnership with Korn Ferry, invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Chair, Department of Cell Biology.

Founded in 1819 as the 10th medical school in America, the University of Virginia School of Medicine – with 20 clinical departments, 9 research departments, and 7 research centers – consistently attracts some of the nation’s most prominent researchers to develop breakthrough treatments that benefit patients around the world. Those research efforts are backed by more than $280 million in grant funding and the staff and faculty that make all of it possible.

As part of its mission to provide excellence and innovation in patient care, UVA Health engages talented researchers and trainees, promotes and facilitates cutting-edge biomedical research, and prides itself on providing exemplary clinical care to patients from across the Commonwealth of Virginia and the surrounding region. The Medical Center includes the flagship 696-bed Magnet® recognized University Hospital, which houses a Level I trauma center, the UVA Children's hospital, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, the Charles Strickler Transplant Center, and more than 100 primary and specialty care clinics. The UVA Medical Center has received national accolades for outstanding clinical services in several disciplines, including oncology, cardiovascular, and women and children's services. Further, the integration of basic science departments in the School of Medicine within a vibrant health system contributes significantly to the clinical, research, and education missions of UVA Health. Critical to UVA’s success in continuing to provide excellence and innovation in patient care and strengthen cutting-edge research and capabilities, is the recruitment of a new Chair of the Department of Cell Biology. A national search is underway.

The Chair of the Department of Cell Biology will lead excellence in scientific discovery in cell and developmental biology and will shape a compelling vision for the Department. They will be responsible for all aspects of the Department, including leading and developing faculty, financial and operational management, strategic planning and growth, and creating a welcoming and nurturing environment to support the success of all UVA community members. Sustaining a thriving education enterprise is paramount, therefore, this new Chair will have the opportunity to further expand the Department with new faculty recruitments and is expected to continue to shape the Department for national recognition. In addition, the Chair will represent the Department across UVA, create opportunities for collaboration, and cultivate external donors and partners for future departmental growth and distinction.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair will work closely with other Department Chairs, Center and Institute Directors, and School of Medicine and Health System leaders. They will be a renowned investigator and experienced leader with a proven record of exemplary scholarship, innovation in education and training, collaborative leadership, administrative experience, program development, research, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment and retention, and engagement across an academic health system. They will foster a culture of collaboration, integrity, trust, shared accountability, and mission focus, have earned a PhD or MD/PhD or equivalent, as well as a level of accomplishment that warrants an appointment as a full professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Additionally, a strong record of research accomplishments, productivity, and peer-reviewed extramural funding, and a track record of program development and faculty and trainee recruitment and development is highly desirable.

Korn Ferry is assisting UVA with this important recruitment. Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae and a letter of interest. To ensure full consideration, inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted electronically, in confidence, to tara.vittese@kornferry.com
