Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a passionate and visionary leader to take the helm as Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, driving excellence in student success, cultural engagement, and academic leadership. 

The Director, Oodgeroo Unit will manage and lead the University’s Oodgeroo Unit which undertakes a range of activities to foster success and retain a significant and growing Indigenous Australian student population. The Oodgeroo Unit also provides leadership, expertise and advice in relation to Indigenous Australian student matters to all parts of the University. The Director will foster successful educational outcomes for Indigenous Australian students, develop the quality of teaching, learning and cultural services within the Oodgeroo Unit, and nurture positive, collaborative relationships between the Unit, faculties, students and key stakeholders. The position is responsible for contributing to achieving QUT’s priority for building, sustaining and celebrating a culture of excellence in Indigenous Australian education, research and engagement.

Established in 1991, The Oodgeroo Unit is QUT's Indigenous Australian student success unit, providing admission pathways and support for Indigenous Australian people. The Oodgeroo Unit is responsible for and committed to ensuring pathways to higher education and the academic success of Indigenous Australian people. 

This includes; 

  • assisting Indigenous Australian people to enter University 
  • providing our students with academic, personal, and cultural support throughout their degree 
  • providing a visible cultural presence at QUT 
  • promoting real world opportunities for our students. 

Our main administration office is located at Gardens Point campus, with facilities at our Kelvin Grove student centre. On both campuses we have computer labs, places to study and work with tutors, and places to meet with other students. All Oodgeroo Unit staff are required to work across both campuses. The Oodgeroo Unit is situated within the Chancellery Division - Indigenous Australians Portfolio.

What you need to succeed

  1. Education, training and/or experience equivalent to completion of postgraduate qualifications with extensive relevant managerial experience. 
  2. Demonstrated ability to manage effectively the human, physical and financial resources to delivery high quality organisational outcomes. 
  3. Highly developed communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to lead and interact effectively with a cohesive and high performing Indigenous Australian team. 
  4. Understanding of teaching and learning and Indigenous Australian cultural services in higher education leading to achievement of quality learning outcomes for Indigenous Australian students. 
  5. Experience in developing and implementing quality programs to enact policy and programs relevant to Indigenous Australian education. 
  6. Strong track record of developing and maintaining productive working relationships and networks across a large, complex organisational and within the Indigenous community to achieve desired outcomes.
