Job Description

DESCRIPTION

This position is a full-time tenure track, 11-month counselor assignment in the Counseling and Matriculation Division. The current counseling work week is not less than 35-hours week. The assignment, serving students in the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), CARE, NextUp & Guardian Scholars Programs. The EOPS / NextUp Counselor provides comprehensive academic, career, and equity-centered counseling using intrusive and trauma-informed practices. Services are provided in compliance with Title 5 EOPS and NextUp categorical guidelines to promote persistence, completion, and transfer. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development and campus committees is expected. The teaching assignment may include courses offered in either onsite, online and/or hybrid format, evening and/or Saturday classes.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Work 35 weekly hours per semester which includes direct student contact and preparation, with District/community service, and shared governance.
  • Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to EOPS, CARE, and NextUp students.
  • Create abbreviated & comprehensive student educational plans for degree completion, certificate pathways, and transfer.
  • Assist students on Academic Guidance with pathways back to academic good standing and connection to campus resources.
  • Provide intrusive case management and early intervention for students facing academic, financial, personal, or housing-related barriers.
  • Provide personal, academic counseling and crisis intervention related to housing instability, food insecurity, mental health concerns, parenting responsibilities, and foster youth transitions.
  • Ensure compliance with Title 5 EOPS and NextUp program requirements.
  • Maintain accurate counseling notes, student records, and categorical documentation for audit and reporting purposes.
  • Conduct outreach, recruitment, orientations, campus tours, and student success workshops.
  • Be available to teach Human Development, counseling, or personal development courses.
  • Maintain records of attendance, census, grades, and related documentation.
  • Provide an environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Perform other counseling & program-related duties as assigned.
  • Participate in faculty/division meetings and on-campus trainings.
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of curriculum and student learning outcomes.
  • Use trainings to improve teaching and learning.
  • Participate in professional development activities that support best practices for counseling and teaching a diverse student population.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds and learning styles of community college students.
  • Travel between District locations as required.
  • Assignment may include working during the day (in-person), evening, or online on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Qualifications for Faculty in California Community College: (Applicant must meet one of the following requirements)

Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, or the equivalent, 

AND 

EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987, shall: 

  • Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages OR
  • Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community   college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages

AND 

In addition, an EOPS counselor hired after October 24, 1987, shall have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages

Antelope Valley College Equivalency: No Equivalency

ANDa sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (tit. 5 § 53024.1).
