Position Description

The University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of New Media invites applications for a limited-term Instructor specializing in Critical Media Studies. The appointment is for 9 months, from August 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027, and is part time (0.67 of full time) for that period.

Primary teaching duties are within the New Media program, with assigned courses including:

• What is New Media? (NMED 1150)
• Critical Contexts for New Media II (NMED 3150)
• Senior Seminar in New Media (NMED 4150)

All courses will be face-to-face delivery. Course assignments may be modified as the department’s needs evolve through the year.

The successful candidate will also contribute to providing an excellent student experience through engagement in service activities, which may include committee service to support the New Media program and participation in student recruitment and retention projects.

Qualifications

The committee recognizes that racialized and Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and women and gender minorities have been historically underrepresented in graduate education and is open to a variety of forms of evidence demonstrating that a candidate meets the below requirements:

• Demonstrated expertise in the critical study of new media, including a strong understanding of the technologies, theoretical frameworks, and historical trajectories that shape the contemporary media landscape. Ability to situate these elements within relevant cultural, social, and historical contexts in the design and delivery of the courses listed above.
• Candidates must demonstrate rigorous capacity for critical analysis, scholarly inquiry, and pedagogical practice. Evidence of this capacity may be shown through multiple pathways, including graduate-level education (e.g., a Master’s degree in New Media, Media Studies, or a related field), scholarly research, research-creation practice, professional experience, and/or community-engaged work.
• Demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher, preferably at the post-secondary level.
• Ability to teach a diverse student body, incorporating innovative and equity-informed pedagogical approaches, and contributing to decolonization and Indigenization through teaching activities.
• Ability to support students’ intellectual and professional development through critical inquiry, research and/or research-creation, and discussion-based learning, and to help students apply these skills across academic, creative, and professional contexts.
• Ability to contribute to departmental culture in a positive manner, through collegiality, reliability, professional communication, conflict resolution skills, and collaboration.
• Interest in recruitment activities is an asset.

Salary

Salary range for the 9-month term is $32,755 - $43,080, commensurate on experience.
