Lecturer in Korean Language
The Department of Asian Societies, Cultures and Languages at Dartmouth College seeks to appoint two Lecturers in Korean Language. Applicants should be specialists in Korean language pedagogy who are prepared to teach courses in Korean language at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. The ASCL Department is launching a new Korean language learning program during 2025-2026 by offering a sequence of introductory-level courses. The two instructors hired will expand the program during 2026-27 and 2027-28 to include intermediate and advanced Korean courses.
At Dartmouth, world language courses are taught using the innovative Rassias method of language learning. Introductory- and intermediate-level language courses feature instructor-directed classes enhanced by additional small-group practice sessions led by undergraduate Apprentice Teachers (AT) who work closely with the instructor. Both positions will include responsibility for hiring, training, and supervising Apprentice Teachers, as well as preparing materials for their use in practice sessions.
These positions will be non-remote and in-residence at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. Appointments begin on July 1, 2026 and run for 12 months, with reappointment for an additional 12 months conditional upon satisfactory performance. Further reappointments on a multi-year basis are possible, depending on performance and available funding.
Each instructor will teach six courses per year, including two courses in each of Dartmouth's fall, winter, and spring quarters (ten weeks each). Each position comes with a competitive salary and benefits.
Qualified candidates must have an M.A. or higher degree in Korean language pedagogy, Korean (applied) linguistics, Korean language and cultural studies, second language acquisition with an emphasis on Korean, or a closely related field, completed by the start date. Dartmouth can provide J-1 visa sponsorship for eligible candidates.
Please submit: a cover letter addressing all relevant aspects of the position; a curriculum vitae; two confidential letters of recommendation (at least one addressing language teaching); and a teaching portfolio including a list of Korean language courses previously taught, sample syllabi for at least two Korean language courses, and a lesson plan for one class session (with a link to a video recording if possible).
Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2025. Preliminary interviews will be conducted via Zoom in November and early December 2025. Finalists will be invited to visit the Dartmouth campus and teach a class session in an Introductory Korean course in January 2026. Questions can be directed to Professor Soyoung Suh at soyoung.suh@dartmouth.edu.
