Job Details
The Campus Rec Coordinator is responsible to provide and oversee effective operations for respective Campus Recreation administration, programs, and/or facilities during set work hours. The Coordinator will provide direction to part time and/or student workers by supervising tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures. They are responsible for maintaining safety, reducing risk, and executing job specific functions.
The Liberty Mountain Facilities Coordinator is responsible for small landscape projects, mowing, weed eating, tree/shrub trimming, seeding, planting, weed control, equipment maintenance and/or seasonal site cleanup tasks at the various Campus Rec facilities. The primary facilities serviced include the Hydaway Outdoor Center and the Liberty Mountain Trail System. Other facilities include, but are not limited to Liberty Mountain Gun Club, Snowflex Centre, Equestrian Center and various athletic fields overseen by Campus Recreation. Tasks may include any other duties or special projects as assigned. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is important for this role. This position is responsible for leading student employees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for directly overseeing a team of student employees. This includes hiring, training, delegating tasks, scheduling, and evaluating.
- Maintain the cleanliness of Campus Rec facilities grounds by picking up litter, brush and tree deadfall. Additionally, sweeping patios, walks and steps and emptying trash/recycling barrels.
- Responsible for maintaining the Liberty Mountain Trail System: clearing debris, fixing damaged sections, ensuring proper signage, and removing trees and brush as needed.
- Performs routine and as-needed lawn and garden bed maintenance including grass cutting, lawn edging, pulling weeds, mulching, leaf removal, and pruning, watering; planting of trees, shrubs, ground cover, perennial and annual flowers.
- Digs holes and trenches and excavates for landscaping and hardscaping using picks and shovels or related equipment. Hauls or spreads topsoil, gravel, sand, mulch, hay, or related materials using wheelbarrows and rakes.
- Operates and performs light maintenance on light/ heavy-duty vehicles, riding mowers, push mowers, backhoes, rakes, shovels, blowers, sprayers, chain saws, hydraulic boom, small tools, and any other equipment associated with turf care.
- Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while operating grounds related equipment including but not limited to; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel-toed boots, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
- Make purchases and recommendations for departmental assets or expenses.
- Frequently oversee and assist with events or operations during evening, nights or weekend hours.
- Perform all other tasks assigned by the Director of Outdoor Recreation to aid and assist in the operation of all Campus Recreation facilities.
- Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position is responsible for up to 4 student employees
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Required Qualifications:
- Landscaping/Maintenance experience
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid certifications
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Four-year college degree from an accredited university
- Leave No Trace training or certification
- Experience or training in Trail Building and Maintenance
- Experience with LU software such as Swiper, Workday, 25 Live, Webcheckout, etc.

Physical and Sensory Abilities
- Occasionally required to travel to local and off campus locations.
- Regularly required to hear and speak to effectively communicate orally.
- Required to be able stand, walk, and climb stairs to move around campus for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift up to 75+ pounds and perform duties of grounds maintenance and landscaping outdoors in typical Virginia climate.
- Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily hours as well as various evening hours.
- Ability to use radio and telephone to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions. Must be able to stand for long periods.
- Must be able to perform physically demanding work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, and standing, walking and driving.

Work Environment
- The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is an outdoor setting and defined by the weather.
Driving Requirements
- Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
