Nurse Practitioner Fellow - Palliative Care

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Adult Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowship is a one-year full time fellowship to prepare a qualified nurse practitioner to assume clinical, leadership and educator roles in adult palliative care specialty practice. Nurse fellows join an interprofessional class, the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship, of nurse practitioners, physicians, social worker, and pharmacist who share the goal of a career in palliative care. Training includes classroom teaching and clinical supervision by experts in the field so fellows can attain proficiency in the care of patients with serious illness or at the end of life. Fellows will gain competency in management of pain and other symptoms, end of life symptom management, provision of psycho-social support for patients and families, and advanced communication skills.

Schedule

Monday - Friday; 8-5 PM.

Fellowship position from: July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.

Elements of the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship include:

  • Mentoring by expert advanced palliative nurses and interdisciplinary team members that include physicians, psychologists, social workers, chaplains, and pharmacists.
  • The fellowship conforms to the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association’s Standards of Clinical Education of Hospice and Palliative Nurses.
  • Fellows receive a salary and full benefits for 1 year from 7/1/2026-6/30/2027.
  • Fellows attend a summer intensive classroom curriculum in the early months of fellowship that covers principles and domains of palliative care. For the remainder of the year fellows have ½ days didactic sessions monthly.
  • Clinical rotations will include: inpatient Palliative Care Service at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Adult Palliative Care Clinic, home and inpatient hospice, and community-based palliative care.
  • Elective rotations designed by fellow.
  • Retreats for fellows on Teaching, Resiliency, and Leadership
  • Scholarly projects that are assigned include:
    • Quality improvement project
    • Presentation at Palliative Care Grand Rounds
    • Submission of an abstract and attendance at the 2027 Annual Assembly http://aahpm.org/meetings/assembly
    • Preparation and presentation to a small group on a clinical topic
    • Participation in Nursing seminars

Qualifications

  • Masters or Doctorate in Nursing from an accredited program by January 2026.
  • Board certified or board-eligible by March 1, 2026:
    • Adult/Geriatric Primary Care, Adult Acute Care or Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts required before start of fellowship (July 1, 2026).
  • Prescriptive authority for controlled substances in MA with DEA registration required before start of fellowship.
  • Prior experience as Nurse Practitioner preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfillment of all requirements including didactics curriculum and scholarly assignments of the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship.
  • Comply with all job requirements of DFCI Nurse Practitioner.

Pay Transparency Statement

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.

Adult Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowship $100,000.00 per year based on working 40 hrs/week
