Post Doctoral Scholar
Post Doctoral Scholar to join the School of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State University studying physical properties on slope stability and paleoseismological studies in subduction zone settings. The Post Doctoral Scholar will embark on a program of independent research with the primary goal to determine current-day slope stability in the southern Cascadia offshore margin based on measurements of shear strength, and the potential for future slope instability and the style of failure that may result. Duties will include conducting laboratory work centered around processing samples for grain size, Atterberg limits, shear strength, and mineralogy; leading report and manuscript preparation for submission to peer-reviewed journals; and co-mentoring undergraduate students. Other responsibilities include assisting with project management including scheduling regular progress meetings with collaborators, presenting updates, and general project communications.
Qualifications:
PhD in Earth Sciences or a related field by the time of hire is required, along with a strong theoretical or practical background in submarine geohazards and soil mechanics. Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining a laser particle analyzer and fall cone penetrometer; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and a collaborative mentality towards research and mentoring.
Desired skills and techniques include experience performing particle size analyses with laser particle analyzers, Atterberg limits, undrained shear strength, resedimentation, consolidation, and X-ray diffraction. These required and desired skills should be demonstrated through a record of project experience and professional academic contributions including peer-reviewed publications.
