PROJECT ADVISOR / UPWARD BOUND (2 POSITIONS)
Position Summary
This position is located in Detroit, Michigan and serves students within a Detroit Public Schools Community District High School and Charter Schools. The Project Advisor position is a federally-funded TRIO program providing opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. The Project Advisor assists in planning, implementing and administering the goals and objectives of the TRIO Upward Bound program. This job requires a level of independence to respond to requests from the Project Director, university personnel, school administrators, community partners, students, and parents within defined grant regulations, guidelines, and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in social work, education, counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Experience working with educational programs or similar projects.
- Experience developing and implementing programs and workshops.
- Experience with the college admissions and financial aid process.
- Experience and comfortability working with underrepresented students, parents, and community members.
- Possession of a valid drivers license and proof of current automobile insurance coverage.
- Ability to manage confidential information.
- Proven ability to be self-directed, a self-starter, and work independently.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must have flexibility and availability to work evenings, weekends, irregular hours, and travel as required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in education, social work, counseling, or a related field.
- Two years of experience working with TRIO, high school programs, or college access programs.
- Experience working with low-income, first-generation youth.
- Experience with pre-college summer residential programs.
- Ability to and familiarity with using social media outlets.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish with the ability to read and write.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Orients target schools, personnel, community, parents, students, and stakeholders about the Upward Bound (UB) Program.
- Develops a working relationship with school administrators, counselors, teachers, parents, community agencies, CMU personnel, etc.
- Develops and executes strategies to identify, recruit, select, and retain eligible students within target schools.
- Manages curriculum development and facilitates program workshops/seminars related to college, career, and financial planning during the academic school year and summer.
- Manages the participant case load, which includes assessing participant needs, monitoring academic progress while in the UB program, and referring to supportive services as needed.
- Assists high school seniors with follow-up regarding post-secondary matriculation (e.g., FAFSA completion, Scholarship Essays, College Applications, and complete college transition).
- Works with students to establish both short-term and long-term educational goals and the steps needed to achieve them.
- Advises students on course selection, dual enrollment, college applications, and college entrance exams.
- Assists with the coordination and implementation of college tours, educational/cultural/social field trips, and events that promote college access, supervises students during such events.
- Disseminates college access/financial literacy information to students and parents/guardians during monthly meetings/workshops.
- Assists with preparing written communication, memos, flyers, and newsletters for key stakeholders.
- Serves as part of the team to assist with planning, developing, and achieving overall program goals.
- Responsible for accurate documentation of student records/progress and prepares reports as required in the database monthly.
- Maintains positive leadership, ethical/professional conduct, and confidentiality of program participants information.
- Collects and tracks data for the grant and annual performance report utilizing the data management system.
- Supervises and oversees student activities, events, and programs, as well as overnight trips.
- Follows all project regulations to meet all program goals/objectives.
- Completes monthly reconciliations to track program spending.
- Monitors Upward Bound alumni after high school graduation to track post-secondary education attainment.
- Travels to target high schools and makes home visits as needed.
- Attends meetings, trainings, and conferences as assigned.
- Relocates to the Central Michigan University main campus during the summer academy component of the UB program to facilitate and manage day- to-day summer activities.
