ABOUT THE ROLE

We're looking for a talented, motivated researcher with a commitment to equity and flexible thinking, willing to use a broad range of methods in a programme on improving social participation in health.

Working as part of multi-disciplinary teams, you will support the Principal Investigator in delivery of research activity on the SUNWAI project. We are looking for someone to take a leadership role in the realist economic evaluation of social participation in health movements. These innovative methods, under development in Northumbria University, will allow you to use both qualitative theory-driven evaluation skills and quantitative economic evaluation skills to examine the distribution of costs and benefits from these movements in the past, and assess ongoing participatory action research cycles for sustainability. Your commitment to health equity and understanding of equitable partnerships should be evident from your application and interview.

This new and exciting global health research fellow role is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) as part of the SUNWAI team. We are looking for a motivated individual to join our team who is self-organised, widely read across disciplines, and willing to engage as equals with both academic and professional support colleagues and collaborators. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to and knowledge of working with marginalised communities, perhaps in an international collaboration setting.

Further information is available in the role description.

The post is offered at 80%FTE on a fixed term basis for 3 years, beginning 1 January 2026.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Social participation for Universal health Coverage: evidence-informed NetWorks Advancing Inclusion team (SUNWAI) is a newly established team to undertake and deliver an international programme of research on social participation in health for sexual and gender minorities (GSM) in India, Thailand and Vietnam. The collaborative research project is led by Dr. Meghan Kumar (Northumbria University) and Dr. Devaki Nambiar (The George Institute for Global Health, India) and involves collaborations with Mahidol University (Thailand), Hanoi Medical University (Vietnam) and University of Essex (UK). We will also have several funded PhD students and research fellows making up a vibrant Early Career Researcher community.

You will work with the Northumbria project team in the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing in the School of Healthcare and Nursing Sciences at the Northumbria Coach Lane campus.

ABOUT YOU

Applicants should hold a PhD in health systems, health economics, or related methodological areas and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in evaluations of complex interventions to improve health equity through participatory approaches.

Further information about the requirements of the role is available in the person specification.

If you would like an informal discussion about the role, please contact meghan.kumar@northumbria.ac.uk.
