Department: Environment Health & Safety

Salary: $75,100 - $85,450

Description:

Implements and manages university wide safety programs and activities, including laboratory audits, hazardous waste management, environmental compliance and occupational, radiation and biological safety. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state and instructional rules and regulations.

Pursuant to the State of Texas Executive Order No. GA-48, this position researches, works on, or has access to critical infrastructure and requires the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the University infrastructure. This position requires personnel be routinely reviewed to determine whether or not criminal history or continuous connections for the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the employee from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure.

  1. Develops, administers and interprets programs and policies for radiation safety, chemical safety, biological safety, physical safety, or environmental protection functions.
  2. Analyzes hazards and associated work practices in laboratories and advises laboratory personnel in the development of Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory bench procedures to minimize the potential for accidents.
  3. Develops and implements strategies, policies, procedures and control measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
  4. Oversees the hazardous waste management program.
  5. Prepares reports for submission to supervisors, primary investigators, and/or managers, which identify the potential hazard(s) and/or program discrepancies found and provides recommendations for control and compliance.
  6. Evaluates facility and construction plans to identify safety concerns and makes recommendations to ensure a compliant, safe, and healthy institutional environment.
  7. Participates in the development and delivery of campus-wide safety training for employees, students and/or faculty, including fire safety, energy control, controlled substances or hazardous materials.
  8. Supervises staff and conducts quality assurance reviews of staff's work products.
  9. Responsible for obtaining and maintaining university registrations and licenses and serves as liaison with state and federal regulatory agencies. Assist in ensuring compliance with state or federal permits relating to the use of hazardous agents.
  10. Maintains records and documentation related to environmental and safety programs; prepares and submits reports to state and federal regulatory agencies and prepares various types of reports including submissions to safety committees or advisory groups and activity reports.
  11. Communicates with federal, state and local safety, health and environmental agencies as a department representative concerning compliance issues and emerging standards.
  12. Performs other job-related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Occupational Safety in higher education experience preferred
  2. Environmental Compliance or Industrial Hygiene experience preferred
  3. Applicable certification preferred (example-certified safety professional-CSP)
  4. Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, natural or physical science

Required Documents: Resume, professional references, certifications/credentials (if any)

MQ: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of five (5) years of directly job-related experience. Requires technical certification or licensing directly related to the job, as specified on a job description addendum.
