The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an outstanding opportunity for a full-time tenure, clinical, or practice track faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences for a position in Small Animal Emergency/Critical Care Medicine (SAECC).

Position Overview

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine announces an outstanding opportunity for a full-time practice track, clinical track or tenure track faculty position in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Medicine. The successful candidate will join a program already supported by five faculty criticalists, seven residents in the Small Animal ECC Service, and joined by four equine ECC faculty members. The SAECC service is supported by 28 certified veterinary technicians, as well as 8 veterinary assistants and a client care liaison. In addition, the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences supports a faculty of over 70 clinical specialists, educators, and investigators along with extensive training programs for professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students

Practice-track candidates will be assigned approximately 80-90% clinical duty, including teaching of students and advanced training of interns and residents on the clinical floor. There is no expectation for scholarly activity or teaching outside of the clinical setting. Clinical-track candidates will be assigned approximately 60-65% time in clinics, including clinical teaching of the veterinary students, and advanced training of the interns and residents. Patient management, client service, classroom didactic and laboratory teaching of clinical and preclinical students, and advanced training of interns and residents is anticipated. Sponsored research is not required for clinical-track faculty, but clinical research, publications or other scholarly activities to advance clinical veterinary medicine are expected and encouraged. Tenure-track faculty are estimated to have a 40-50% commitment to clinical service and clinical teaching with the remainder devoted to didactic and laboratory teaching, and to developing research/scholarship, including collaboration with other scientists, advising of graduate student and resident research, and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Faculty are also expected to be involved in professional and community outreach, continuing education, committee service, and curriculum development.

The Small Animal Emergency cand Critical Care Service is located in a new suite within the comprehensive Veterinary Medical Center and referral center with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including high-flow oxygen therapy devices, mechanical ventilation, endoscopy, cystoscopy, laser lithotripsy, extracorporeal therapies, laparoscopy, digital radiography, ultrasonography, fluoroscopy, 128-slice CT, 128-slice PET/CT, a 3 Tesla MRI, nuclear medicine, an interventional radiology suite, and a 24-7 small animal emergency and critical care unit. All clinical facilities, including the surgical suites were completely renovated in 2017.

Performance Objectives

CLINICAL SERVICE AND PATIENT CARE

Faculty in SAECC provide supervision and oversight of case management for house officers and students receiving cases through the Emergency Service. Faculty may also receive cases primarily based on need and/or desire.

Faculty in SAECC provide supervision and oversight of case management for house officers and students receiving transfer through the Critical Care Service.

The OSU-VMC small animal ICU is managed in an open style with all specialty services providing primary patient care of the patients in the unit. It is anticipated the appointee will interact closely with the faculty and programs in all small animal clinical disciplines.

TEACHING DUTIES

Clinical, didactic, and laboratory teaching of professional students, residents and interns in the Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care Medicine Service, in conjunction with the diagnosis and treatment of patients presented to the OSU Veterinary Medical Center.

Didactic and clinical skills teaching of professional students during the pre-clinical curriculum is expected for clinical track and tenure track faculty.

OUTREACH DUTIES

Faculty members are expected to be involved in professional and community outreach, continuing education, committee service, and curriculum development.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY DUTIES

Use of scheduled off-clinic time for preparing teaching materials, conducting clinical research, writing for publication, and other scholarly activities expected for clinical and tenure track faculty.

Tenure track faculty are expected to meet the criteria established in the colleges Research Metrics document for their level of research appointment.

Although extramurally funded research is not required for clinical track faculty, participation in collaborative research projects, resident and graduate student projects is strongly encouraged.

For Practice Track there is no expectation for scholarly activity.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required:

  • DVM (or equivalent)
  • Specialty board certification by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) or eligibility to take the ACVECC certifying examination in 2026 or 2027.

Desired:

  • Excellence in patient management
  • Excellence and commitment in the delivery of emergency and critical care medicine
  • Excellence in service to clients and/or rDVMs
  • Ability to contribute to a range of areas of emergency medicine
  • Excellence and experience in the clinical training of veterinary students
  • Experience in the training of house officers
  • Evidence of mentoring (e.g. students, trainees, staff, employees, peer mentoring)
  • Evidence of interest in collaborative research and scholarly contributions
  • Evidence of supporting a culture of collegiality, professional citizenship, and collaboration
  • Advanced degree or equivalent research experience (tenure-track candidates)
  • Evidence of collaboration and/or PI on research grants (tenure-track candidates)
  • Scholarly track record commensurate with track and rank.
