OFFICIAL TITLE: Staff Assistant, Residence Director
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of Residence Life and Student Experience
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises Graduate/Undergraduate Assistant, Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, and student staff.
General Statement of Duties: Worcester State seeks to hire a Residence Director to provide students with a safe and inclusive living environment on campus. Residence Directors oversee the management of the residence halls, and the development of programs, activities, and policies to improve the overall community within their hall. They will supervise, train, develop, and evaluate senior resident assistants, resident assistants, and other student staff. Serve as a student conduct hearing officer in adjudicating policy violations. This is a 12 month, live-on position with on-duty responsibilities in addition to weeknight and weekend commitments on a regular basis. The primary goal of this position is to establish a residential community that is conducive to the academic and personal development of students. The Residence Director position will work in direct collaboration with several stakeholders/programming initiatives around campus - some examples include Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Health & Wellness, & Summer Conferencing.
Responsibilities:

Staffing:
- (E) Oversight of ~400 resident students in a residential building(s)
- (E) Supervise, train, manage, and evaluate a staff of 12-13 Resident Assistants
- (E) Responsible for evaluating Resident Assistant performance in the assigned area and providing recommendations for the annual rehire process.
- (E) Hold regular weekly office hours in building, weekly staff meetings, one on ones, and attend Resident Assistant programs in order to be available and accessible to resident students.
- (E) Support the security of the residence halls and work to teach students personal responsibility within the residence halls.
Administrative:
- (E) Responsible for the planning, organization, direction and budgeting of all resident student programming that meets the diverse needs of the students within the assigned residence hall.
- (E) Become acquainted with residents in order to facilitate referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments.
- (E) Ability to demonstrate multicultural competence, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations, working in collaboration with our Multicultural Affairs Office.
- (E) Responsible for reporting daily repairs to custodial/maintenance staff through SchoolDude.
- (E) Work to ensure the proper opening and closing of all residence hall facilities, room assignments, maintenance and residence hall orientation.
- (E) Responsible for overseeing the damage billing process in their assigned area each semester.
- (E) Assist with departmental processes such as Staff Selection, RA Development and Evaluation, Room Selection, Desk Assistants, etc.
- (E) Responsible for leading any of the following departmental processes: Staff Selection, RA Development and Evaluation, Summer Conferences, Desk Assistants, Access, and Departmental Assessment.
Programming:
- (E) Implement and oversee a specified programming model within the building to meet the needs of students.
- (E) Coordinate the development of activities and programs within the hall, in order to achieve the educational goals of the department.
- (E) Develop a living/learning environment based upon departmental initiatives and relevant theories while working in collaboration with our Binienda Center around community service focused activities and opportunities.
- (E) Coordinate assessment efforts to determine effectiveness of program components.
- (E) Assist in long range planning and assessment of the programmatic and community aspects of the residence halls.
Student Conduct:
- (E) Act as a student conduct hearing officer for the residence halls.
- (E) Ability to learn and understand our Maxient student conduct system.
- (E) Facilitate conflict resolution between resident students.
- (E) Evaluate crisis and emergency situations while working in direct collaboration with University Police and other University offices, as necessary.
Other Duties:
- (E) Provide written reports and summaries as requested by the Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Directors of Residence Life and Housing.
- (E) Participate in a rotating, on-call weekend and evening duty system, including all Holidays and breaks.
- (E) Maintain on campus presence a minimum of two weekends per month.
- (E) Serve on various departmental and university committees, as approved by the supervisor.
- (E) Participate in the on-site hosting of the summer conference programs in collaboration with Conference and Events.
- (E) Demonstrate sensitivity to students, faculty and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation, cultural, disability and socioeconomic backgrounds and learning styles.
- (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
- (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/ Affirmative Action objectives.
- (E) Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated previous supervisory and administrative experience.
- Demonstrated experience with education, cultural and recreational programming.
- Knowledge of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion, especially pertaining to issues in higher education, and an understanding of college student engagement and creating learning outcomes.
- Ability to deal effectively with conflicts and crises.
- Demonstrated awareness/sensitivity toward issues pertaining to Affirmative Action and non-discrimination.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree
- One year or more of Post-Baccalaureate experience as a live-in staff member.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The firm annual salary for this position is $47,035.00, commensurate with relevant professional experience and education. The anticipated start date for this position is January 6, 2025.
