NOTICE OF VACANCY
Position Summary:
The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, WA invites applications for a permanent full-time, nine-month, tenure-track/tenured faculty position in Computer Science at the assistant, associate, or full professor level. This position has a focus on computer security broadly construed to include core security topics as well as related topics (e.g., privacy, trustworthiness, mobile/wireless security, distributed learning and cloud security, software and system security). Areas of theoretical computer science that also overlap with security (e.g., algorithms in the field, cryptography) are encouraged to apply. As per CSRankings.org, WSU is ranked in the Top 20 in design automation, Top 50 in cryptography, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing, and a growing emphasis on several areas related to cybersecurity. This position is intended to build on these strengths and the newly launched cybersecurity program. The new faculty will have numerous collaboration opportunities with several large initiatives at WSU including (but not limited to) the NSF-USDA AgAID AI Institute, DOD-funded VICEROY CySER Institute for cybersecurity, and WSU-PNNL Advanced Grid Institute. WSU is one of the National Security Agency’s National Centers of Academic Excellence-Research (NSA CAE-R), and it is a school with an active Cybercorps Scholarship for Service (SFS) program. It is anticipated the successful candidate will begin their appointment August 16, 2026. An earlier start date may be negotiable depending on the availability of the candidate and needs of the program.
Job duties:
The job duties of the successful candidate include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science and/or engineering; establishing an independent research program and conducting extramurally funded research; publishing in top-tier peer-reviewed venues; advising M.S. and Ph.D. students; participating in the continuous teaching assessment activities of the School of EECS; effectively communicating and interacting with students; and collaborating with others within the School, University, and/or other organizations including regional partners. The anticipated workload will be 50% research, 30% teaching, and 20% service.
Required Qualifications for all candidates at all ranks:
- Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field by the time of hire.
- Demonstrated record of publishing peer-reviewed research work in leading journals and research conferences.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to building a world-class research program at WSU.
- Proven or potential for successful teaching and instruction.
- Demonstrated record of or potential for commitment to an inclusive educational experience in alignment with WSU’s land grant mission.
Additional Required Qualifications for Associate Professor Rank:
- Must have served at least six (6) years in academia, industry, or a national lab after Ph.D.
- Must have experience in advising students and leading funded research programs.
Additional Required Qualifications for Full Professor Rank:
- Must have served at least 10 years in academia, industry, or a national lab after Ph.D.
- Must have experience in advising students and leading funded research programs.
- Must be a recognized leader through national/international awards, honors, and recognitions.
Preferred Qualifications for all candidates at all ranks:
- Demonstrated record of accomplishments to become outstanding scholars and educators.
- Excellent communication skills to be an effective instructor for undergraduate and graduate classes in topics related to computer science and engineering.
- Demonstrated record/potential to become an international leader in the field of research.
- Strong commitment to building a robust research program through extramural funding.
Salary/Benefits:
Assistant Professor Salary Range: $100,000 to $115,000
Associate Professor Salary Range: $115,001 to $135,000
Full Professor Salary Range: $135,001 to $180,000
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for these positions for a nine-month academic appointment. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Washington State University is a land grant, multiple-campus, Research 1 institution. This position will serve on the Pullman campus, which has an enrollment of around 20,000 students and is located in Southeastern Washington on the homelands of the Nimíipuu (Nez Perce) Tribe and Palus people. The new faculty hired for this position will join 32 existing tenure-track faculty members and 18 career-track faculty members in the School of EECS, which has experienced rapid growth in enrollment over the past five years. Around the fall of 2025 over 1,000 undergraduate students were enrolled in its B.S. programs, and 148 graduate students are enrolled in its M.S., and Ph.D. programs in computer science, electrical engineering, and computer engineering. The School of EECS expects continued increase in enrollments and anticipates multiple faculty hires over the next two years. The current faculty composition in the School of EECS includes a member of the National Academy of Engineering, over ten fellows of international professional societies, as well as eighteen CAREER and Young Investigator award recipients. Our faculty excel in both teaching and research, and we sustain multiple internationally recognized research programs in artificial intelligence/machine learning, electronic design automation and computer architecture, high performance computing, data science, cybersecurity, software engineering, and power systems and engineering. Our graduate students have recently won multiple prestigious awards including Microsoft Research fellowship, IBM Research fellowship, and NSF Computing Innovation fellowship.
