UnB Posts Historic Gains in Latest CAPES Postgraduate Review
The Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), Brazil’s federal agency responsible for regulating and funding stricto sensu postgraduate programs, released the preliminary results of its 2021–2024 quadrienal evaluation on 27 May 2026. The Universidade de Brasília (UnB) recorded its strongest performance to date, with 26 of its 90 evaluated programs raising their grades and 60 programs now placed in the top three bands (grades 5, 6 and 7).
This outcome underscores steady progress at one of the country’s leading public research universities and offers fresh data for academics, administrators and prospective doctoral candidates tracking quality indicators that directly influence scholarships, research funding and international partnerships.
How the Quadrienal Evaluation Works
CAPES conducts a comprehensive review every four years of all active master’s and doctoral programs in Brazil’s Sistema Nacional de Pós-Graduação. Each program receives a grade from 1 to 7; a minimum of 3 is required to continue operating. Grades 6 and 7 signal international-level excellence and typically unlock larger scholarship quotas and priority access to research grants.
The 2021–2024 cycle involved detailed data submitted through the Sucupira platform, peer review by area commissions, and final deliberation by the Conselho Técnico-Científico da Educação Superior (CTC-ES). Programs could request reconsideration; final preliminary results followed that stage.
UnB’s Record-Breaking Numbers
According to UnB’s Decanato de Pós-Graduação, the university evaluated 90 programs. The new distribution stands at:
- 5 programs at grade 7
- 16 programs at grade 6 (nearly double the previous nine)
- 33 programs at grade 5
- 30 programs at grade 4
- 6 programs at grade 3
Sixty programs (67 %) now sit in the excellence bands, up from roughly 50 % in the prior cycle. The number of grade-6 programs rose sharply, reflecting stronger international visibility across multiple fields.
Standout Program Improvements
Several programs achieved notable jumps. Ciências Mecânicas rose to grade 7. Ecologia and Psicologia Social, do Trabalho e das Organizações also reached the top grade. Educação attained grade 6 for the first time, a milestone for the Centro-Oeste region. The professional master’s program in Sustentabilidade Junto a Povos e Territórios Tradicionais moved from 3 to 4, opening the door to a future doctorate and expanding access for indigenous, riverside and quilombola students.
Other gains included Administração (to 6), Ciência da Informação (to 6), Ciências da Saúde (to 6) and Informática (to 6). Full details appear on UnB’s dedicated Sucupira page.
National Context and Broader Trends
Across Brazil, the 2021–2024 cycle showed continued growth in high-quality programs. CAPES data indicate an overall increase in the number of grade-6 and grade-7 programs compared with the previous quadrennium. UnB’s performance aligns with this national movement while demonstrating particular strength in consolidating excellence in the Federal District.
Officials note that the evaluation remains the primary mechanism for allocating CAPES scholarships and guiding institutional funding priorities.

Implications for Funding and Scholarships
Higher grades translate directly into larger quotas of CAPES and CNPq scholarships. Programs at grades 6 and 7 receive priority in competitive calls and greater flexibility to attract international students. Administrators at UnB expect the new results to support expanded doctoral cohorts in strategic areas such as sustainability, health sciences and engineering.
Perspectives from UnB Leadership
Decano de Pós-Graduação Roberto Goulart Menezes highlighted the collaborative effort behind the gains. “These results reflect the daily work of faculty, researchers, technical staff and students who continue to produce high-quality science despite budgetary pressures,” he stated in institutional communications. He singled out the Education program’s breakthrough and the social-impact master’s as particularly meaningful for regional development.
Opportunities for Academics and Researchers
The upgraded profile strengthens UnB’s position in national and international rankings and opens doors for joint degrees, sandwich programs and research consortia. Faculty members in rising programs now have stronger cases for productivity grants and international mobility funding.
Guidance for Prospective Students and Job Seekers
PhD-track candidates and early-career researchers can use the Sucupira platform to compare programs by grade, area and institution. UnB’s improved standing signals robust research environments and better prospects for funded positions. Those targeting federal universities should monitor the upcoming resource-allocation calls that follow the final results after the appeals period closes in June 2026.
Future Outlook and Next Steps
The next quadrennial cycle (2025–2028) will incorporate updated evaluation forms released in May 2025. UnB administrators plan to build on current momentum by strengthening international partnerships and supporting programs that achieved grade 5 or 6 to reach the top tier. Continued emphasis on diversity, inclusion and societal impact is expected to feature prominently in future submissions.
Full results and area reports remain available on the official CAPES portal and through UnB’s internal Sucupira dashboard for coordinators and pro-rectors.
