The German (BA) at the University of Waterloo is offered through the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies in the Faculty of Arts. This program aims to develop advanced proficiency in the German language while exploring German literature, culture, history, and linguistics. Students engage in immersive language training, critical analysis of texts, and studies of contemporary German society. Unique features include the option for co-operative education (co-op), allowing students to alternate academic terms with paid work placements, and opportunities for study abroad in German-speaking countries.
Graduates are prepared for careers in education, translation, international business, diplomacy, and cultural organizations. The co-op experience enhances employability by providing practical skills and professional networks in fields requiring bilingual expertise.
The program is supported by faculty specializing in German linguistics, literature, and cultural studies, including experts in medieval German texts and modern German media.
Students have access to language laboratories equipped for multimedia learning and the Waterloo Centre for German and European Studies. Partnerships with universities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland facilitate exchange programs and research collaborations.
