The Political Science (BA) program at the University of Waterloo provides a comprehensive understanding of political systems, institutions, and processes in Canada and globally. Objectives include developing critical thinking skills to analyze public policy, international relations, and governance. Unique features include the option for co-operative education (co-op), allowing students to gain practical experience through paid work terms in government, NGOs, or international organizations, typically extending the program to five terms of study and work.
Graduates are prepared for roles in public administration, policy analysis, diplomacy, and law. The co-op experience enhances employability by providing real-world application of theoretical knowledge.
The program is supported by faculty in the Department of Political Science, including experts in Canadian politics, international security, and public policy.
Students have access to the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a nearby think tank in Waterloo that offers research opportunities and lectures. Partnerships with government agencies facilitate co-op placements and internships.
