The Science and Business (BSc) program at the University of Waterloo is an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree that combines foundational science education with business principles. The program's objectives include equipping students with scientific knowledge in areas such as biology, chemistry, or physics, alongside skills in accounting, finance, marketing, and management. Unique features include its mandatory co-operative education (co-op) component, allowing students to gain up to two years of paid work experience, and the flexibility to specialize in a science stream while pursuing business electives.
Graduates are prepared for roles at the intersection of science and industry, such as in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental consulting, and financial analysis of scientific enterprises. The program's co-op experiences enhance employability, with many students receiving job offers from their co-op employers.
The program is jointly administered by the Faculty of Science and the School of Accounting and Finance. Notable involvement includes faculty from the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics for science components, and experts in business from the Accounting and Finance school.
Students benefit from Waterloo's renowned co-op program, one of the largest in North America, with partnerships across industries including biotech firms like Amgen and financial institutions. Access to specialized labs in the Faculty of Science and the Velocity incubator for entrepreneurial ventures supports hands-on learning.
