The IS2M Mulhouse Campus, located on the Illberg campus of the University of Haute-Alsace, specializes in multidisciplinary materials science research and education. As a joint CNRS-UHA unit (UMR 7361), it focuses on developing advanced functional materials through chemistry, physics, and biology, with emphasis on sustainable processes, nanostructures, and biointerfaces. The campus hosts over 200 researchers, students, and staff, supported by 11 ISO 9001-certified technical platforms for cutting-edge characterization.
- Interfaces and Multidimensional Materials (I2M): Surfaces, stimuli-responsive materials, 3D/4D printing, colloidal chemistry.
- Controlled Porosity Materials (MPC): Porous structures, adsorption, catalysis, energy storage.
- Carbon and Hybrid Materials: Graphene, carbon nanotubes, composites for electronics and energy.
- Transfers, Reactivity, Clean Processes: Process engineering, reactivity modeling, eco-friendly materials.
- Low Dimensionality Systems Physics: Nanophysics, semiconductors, quantum materials.
- Molecular Photochemistry and Photopolymerization: Light-activated synthesis, polymers.
- Growth of Nanostructures and 2D Crystals: Epitaxy, 2D materials like MoS2.
- Biomaterials/Biointerfaces: Biomimetic systems, biomedical applications.
- Multi-Scale Numerical Simulations: Modeling from atomic to macro scales.
Teaching includes the bi-disciplinary Physical Science License in Physics-Chemistry-Mathematics, preparing for Master's in Nanosciences and Materials, engineering schools like ENSCMu (chemical engineering), PhD programs, and teacher training (CAPES). Over 100 students are trained annually across levels, fostering expertise in R&D, industry, and academia.
