This narrow field comprises the study of the structure and development of specific languages, and the general study of the structure and development of language in general (linguistics). Includes applied linguistics (including the teaching of foreign languages); phonetics and phonology; historical linguistics; sociolinguistics; psycholinguistics; translation and interpretation.
