The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is seeking an Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month professional faculty position.
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) offers faculty development related to teaching, mentoring, and student learning. Flagship programs include Quality Teaching talks aligned to OSU's Quality Teaching Framework, Core Courses on key pedagogical areas (course design, assessment, instructional methods, inclusive teaching, and technology), programming for new and early career faculty (New2OSU) and graduate students, short “Sparkshops” introducing faculty to important pedagogical topics, and training for faculty developing and teaching courses for OSU Core Education program. Staff also offer one on one consultations and play a significant role in supporting faculty in conduction peer evaluations and observations and in the use of online technologies and design of blended learning courses. The CTL has also provided faculty with opportunities to develop inclusive teaching practices, and diverse forms of teaching evaluation.
The Associate Vice Provost (AVP) will enhance and further CTL programming for faculty development and student learning in alignment with OSU's institutional mission and https://leadership.oregonstate.edu/strategic-plan. The AVP will work to ensure all faculty have access to necessary support for delivering the highest quality instruction, and that student learning both inside and outside the classroom is the highest priority. These efforts will benefit faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and students at all OSU locations, reflecting OSU's commitment to student success and inclusivity. The AVP will also be a university leader in appropriate and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support student learning and faculty instruction.
The AVP will collaborate within Academic Affairs - including with OSU Libraries and OSU Press; Curriculum Management & Accreditation; Assessment; Core Education; Writing Intensive Curriculum (WIC); and Difference, Power & Oppression (DPO) - and outside of Academic Affairs with units/entities such as the Center for Research on Lifelong STEM Learning, Technology Across the Curriculum, Faculty Affairs, Academic Technology, Ecampus, discipline-based education researchers, and faculty in the College of Education, the School of Psychological Sciences, and the Graduate School's Graduate Certificate in College and University Teaching Program.
The AVP reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Senior Vice Provost. This is a 12-month appointment.
70% LEADERSHIP FOR CTL CORE MISSION
• Provide vision and leadership for faculty development at OSU to advance the achievement of university mission and Prosperity Widely Shared: The Oregon State Plan.
• Work in collaboration with academic units, Faculty Senate leadership and committees, and the various offices and programs listed above to provide broad, accessible support for faculty teaching effectiveness and student learning.
• Develop and promote broad use of evidence-based teaching practices (e.g., inclusive pedagogy, universal design) to support student learning.
• Stay abreast of research and technological innovations in teaching and learning, and collaborate on vision and planning for emerging teaching and learning technologies (e.g., appropriate and ethical use of AI) and platforms.
• Lead campus collaborations in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
• Undertake grant-writing to support projects and initiatives that advance the CTL’s core mission.
20% ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT
• Teach a 1-credit Graduate Teaching Seminar for OSU graduate students teaching as instructors of record (or other course as appropriate/desired)
• Oversee and provide support for faculty fellows.
• Supervise CTL professional staff: supervision, hiring, and professional development in specialized areas of purview and design and delivery of services/programs.
• Supervise WIC and DPO Directors.
• Lead assessment of CTL programs.
• Oversee the CTL budget.
10% Academic Affairs Leadership
• Actively participate as a member of the Academic Affairs leadership team
• Serving as a representative of the Vice Provost as needed
• Other duties as assigned
What You Will Need
• Doctoral or other terminal degree.
• Sustained record of accomplished teaching in a university setting.
• Demonstrated record of success fostering collaboration and lasting partnerships.
• Demonstrated experience seeking external financial support.
• Knowledge of the following, and the ability to apply knowledge to practice:
• Theories of learning and curricular design and effective teaching approaches (e.g., universal design, collaborative learning, service learning, problem-based learning, writing to learn).
• The influence of environmental factors on teaching and learning.
• Learning and program assessment strategies.
• Best practices for instructional technologies, including artificial intelligence.
• Demonstrated appreciation and advocacy for diversity and a commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
• Experience in a supervisory role.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
• At least 8 years of accomplished teaching in a university setting.
• Record of participation in national organizations on college/university teaching.
• Demonstration of scholarship with a focus on teaching and learning.
• Experience directing a Center for Teaching and Learning.
• Experience in a Research-Intensive university setting with large populations of graduate students, teaching assistants and part-time instructors.
• Record of obtaining grants in the areas of teaching innovations and pedagogy.
• Demonstrated record of success supervising professional staff and academic faculty and promoting their professional development.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Normal working conditions with some travel required, as necessary. Work will take place primarily on the Corvallis campus, with some travel as needed to the Bend campus and other OSU locations.
