Dr. Nazirul Hazim A. Khalim is a Lecturer in Econometrics and Business Statistics at the School of Business, Monash University Malaysia. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Econometrics from Monash University, awarded in 2023, with a thesis entitled "Startup Innovation and Growth: Resource Constraints and The Mediating Role of Dynamic Capabilities." His research specializations include applied econometrics, structural models, innovation ecosystems, artificial intelligence, computational social science—with a focus on big data and democracy—and empirical studies of the arts, particularly Southeast Asian cinema, music, and heritage. Khalim promotes sustainability, equity, diversity, and inclusion in his academic endeavors and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals such as good health and well-being, quality education, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, and peace, justice, and strong institutions.
As Chief Investigator, Khalim has led several funded projects, including the Data & Democracy Research Hub (Incubator Grant 2024, AUD 75,000), ASEAN Disinformation Index (Monash Data Futures Institute Seed Grant 2024, AUD 47,500), and Startup Innovation and Growth (School of Business Seed Grant 2023, RM10,000). His notable publications comprise "Phylogeny of cultural heritage in Southeast Asia: a computational analysis of artefact evolution" (2026, co-authored with H.C. Lee and M.E. Phipps), "Characterising brain connectivity in terms of contagion: a multiple time series perspective" (2024, with E.B. Barrios), and works on social media, controversy, and dissent in Southeast Asian popular music. He has received the School of Business Excellence Awards 2025 for Engagement and Impact Excellence, HASS Internal Grant 2025 (RM30,000), and multiple Learning & Teaching Grants. A member of the Econometric Society, Khalim chairs events on data and democracy, develops VR/AR tools for econometrics education, and advances regional insights into disinformation's impact on democratic processes.
