Aaron J. Blashill, Ph.D., is a tenured Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University, where he directs the BISH Lab focusing on body image and health behaviors. He received his B.S. in Psychology from Central Michigan University in 2005 (magna cum laude), M.S. in Clinical Psychology from Saint Louis University in 2007 (with distinction), and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the same institution in 2011. Blashill completed his pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Prior to joining SDSU in 2015 as an Assistant Professor—advancing to Associate Professor in 2018 and Professor in 2021—he served as Staff Psychologist, Instructor, and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and Affiliated Investigator at The Fenway Institute from 2012 to 2015.
Blashill's research specializes in LGBTQ+ health disparities, particularly body image disturbance, eating disorders, suicide prevention, HIV prevention and self-care, skin cancer risk behaviors, and anabolic-androgenic steroid misuse among sexual minority men and adolescents. He is Core Faculty in the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology since 2015 and Associate Co-Director since 2025. His contributions include editorial board service for Body Image (2013-present), Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology (2019-present), Archives of Sexual Behavior (2019-present), and International Journal of Eating Disorders (2022-present). Notable awards include the Society of Behavioral Medicine Early Career Investigator Award (2018) and SDSU Department of Psychology Outstanding Faculty Award (2019). Key publications encompass "Evaluating the muscularity-oriented eating test" (Eating Behaviors, 2025), "Skin cancer risk behaviors in sexual minority men" (Health Psychology, 2024), "Promoting resilience to improve disordered eating (PRIDE)" (International Journal of Eating Disorders, 2024), "Cognitive behavioral therapy for body image and self-care (CBT-BISC)" (Health Psychology, 2017), and "Prevalence of disordered eating and associations with sex, pubertal maturation, and weight in children in the US" (JAMA Pediatrics, 2022). Blashill's scholarship, with over 8,000 citations, has advanced interventions for health equity in sexual and gender minority populations.
