About Adam

Dr. Adam R. Carberry is Professor and Chair in the Department of Engineering Education at The Ohio State University College of Engineering. He holds a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering (minor in Chemistry) from Alfred University (2002), an M.S. in Chemistry from Tufts University (2004), and a Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Tufts University (2010). Prior to joining Ohio State in August 2023, Carberry was an Associate Professor at Arizona State University's Polytechnic School in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, where he served as Graduate Program Chair for the Engineering Education Systems and Design Ph.D. Program (2021–2023) and Director of the Seeking Transformations in Engineering Education through Research (STEER) Lab (2017–2023). Earlier roles include Assistant Professor at Arizona State (2011–2020) and Postdoctoral Research Associate at Tufts University Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (2010–2011).

Carberry's research specializations encompass pre-college engineering education, engineering design, faculty development, mentorship, teaching and learning, and assessment techniques. His primary interests include developing classroom innovations for pre-college and higher education students, empirically understanding engineering student, educator, and practitioner experiences, effective faculty mentorship, entrepreneurial mindset, and sustainability education. He directs the Transformative and Holistic Engineering Education (THE²) Lab at Ohio State. Notable awards and honors include American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Fellow (2023), inaugural Richard Felder Award for Transformative Work in Engineering Education, Fulbright Specialist at École Nationale Supérieure des Mines in Rabat, Morocco (2019), ASEE Educational Research and Methods Division Apprentice Faculty Award (2011), Frontiers in Education New Faculty Award (2012), and Big Ten Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program Fellow (2024–2025). Key publications feature 'Situating intuition in engineering practice' (Journal of Engineering Education, 2023), 'Blended implementation of existing pre-college engineering programs: Teacher perspectives of program impact' (IEEE Transactions on Education, 2024), 'Navigating pre-college engineering teaching during COVID-19' (Journal of Online Learning Research, 2025), 'Unlocking the secrets of intuition use' (International Journal of Engineering Education, 2024), and 'Expanding access to STEM pathways' (School Science and Mathematics Journal, 2023).
