Dr. Adam Sherk is a Scientist at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR) at the University of Victoria and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Social Policy. He earned his PhD from the University of Victoria in 2019. His research focuses on substance use epidemiology and alcohol policy research. He created the International Model of Alcohol Harms and Policy (InterMAHP), an alcohol research platform used by countries worldwide to estimate alcohol-caused harms. He has created or consulted on national alcohol harms monitoring projects in Australia, Finland, Sweden, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada.
Dr. Sherk’s current projects include the Canadian Substance Use Costs and Harms project and the Canadian Alcohol/Ethanol Supply study. He is also a Researcher with the WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centre for Alcohol and Public Health Policy and serves as Senior Scientist and Special Policy Advisor with the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction. Key publications include “The International Model of Alcohol Harms and Policies: A New Method for Estimating Alcohol Health Harms With Application to Alcohol-Attributable Mortality in Canada” (2020), “Alcohol consumption and mortality among Canadian drinkers: A national population-based survival analysis (2000–2017)” (2023), and “An assessment of federal alcohol policies in Canada and priority recommendations: Results from the 3rd Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation Project” (2024).
