Dr. Adith Venugopal serves as Senior Lecturer in Orthodontics within the Department of Oral Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago. His academic qualifications include BDS, MS in Orthodontics from the Philippines, PhD in Orthodontics from Kyungpook National University in South Korea, and FDS RCS (England). Prior to his current role, he held positions such as Associate Professor of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the University of Puthisastra in Cambodia. His research specializes in orthodontic clinical and biomaterial research, encompassing topics such as gummy smile management, botulinum toxin applications, microplastics in dentistry, molar incisor hypomineralization decision-making, clear aligner therapy, and environmental impacts of orthodontic practices.
Dr. Venugopal has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including 'Gummy smiles: Etiologies, diagnoses & formulating a clinically effective treatment protocol' (Seminars in Orthodontics, 2024), 'Botulinum toxin in contemporary orthodontic practice' (Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, 2025), 'Microplastics and nanoplastics in clinical dentistry and orthodontics: Leaching, health implications, and future directions' (Progress in Orthodontics, 2025), 'Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH): The "Why, What and How" of decision making for orthodontists' (Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists, 2024), and 'A narrative roadmap for evidence based clear aligner therapy' (Seminars in Orthodontics, 2026). He received the prestigious Lee Graber Orthodontics 'Changing Lives' award from the World Federation of Orthodontists in 2024, recognizing his transformative treatment of a patient with severe skeletal and dental malocclusion that significantly improved her quality of life, eating, speech, and confidence. Additionally, he holds fellowships including FICD and FPFA, serves as course coordinator for DENT462 Biomedical Sciences 3, and acts as guest editor for special issues on orthodontic treatment in clinical practice. His contributions extend to postgraduate orthodontic education and training at the University of Otago.
