Ahti Salo is Professor of Systems Analysis at Aalto University School of Science, in the Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis and Director of the Systems Analysis Laboratory. He earned his Doctor of Science in Technology from Helsinki University of Technology in 1992, majoring in systems and operations research with a minor in mathematics, along with a Licentiate of Science in Technology in 1990 and a Master of Science in Technology in 1987, the latter with a minor in computer science. Salo also holds docentships in quantitative methods of economics from the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration (1996) and in systems analysis from Helsinki University of Technology (1999). His career includes tenured professorships at Aalto University since 2016 and previously at Helsinki University of Technology from 2005, as well as roles as Vice Head of the Department and Vice Dean for research and partnerships. He has served as visiting professor at the London Business School, Université Paris-Dauphine, University of Vienna, and other institutions, and earlier worked at VTT Technical Research Centre, Nokia Research Center, and Universität Mannheim.
Salo's research focuses on decision analytic methods and their applications in resource allocation, innovation management, risk management, technology foresight, and efficiency analysis, particularly portfolio decision analysis. He has published extensively in leading journals such as Management Science and Operations Research, including the book Portfolio Decision Analysis: Improved Methods for Resource Allocation (Springer, 2011, co-edited with Jeffrey Keisler and Alec Morton), which received the 2013 INFORMS Decision Analysis Society Publication Award. Other key works include 'Contingent Portfolio Programming for the Management of Risky Projects' (Operations Research, 2005) and recent publications on infrastructure reinforcement, maintenance policies, and power-system expansion (e.g., Reliability Engineering and System Safety, 2026; Omega, 2025). With over 10,000 Google Scholar citations, his influence is evident in supervising 30 doctoral dissertations, 229 master's theses, and 85 bachelor's theses. Awards include the Frank P. Ramsey Medal (2022), MCDM Edgeworth-Pareto Award (2019), Knight First Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland (2024), and membership in the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters (2017). Salo has led numerous industry-funded projects, served on editorial boards, as President of the Finnish Operations Research Society, and in advisory roles such as the Government Foresight Group (2023-2027) and COVID-19 Science Panel (2020).
