Aidan Leong is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Radiation Therapy at the University of Otago, Wellington campus, within the Health Sciences Division. He holds a Master of Health Sciences (MHealSc) and a Bachelor of Health Sciences with Honours (BHealSc(Hons)). Appointed as Senior Lecturer since 2015, Leong plays a key role in the national provision of undergraduate and postgraduate education for radiation therapists in a high-tech patient care environment. He teaches advanced papers such as RADT401 Applied Radiation Therapy Advanced Practice and RADT402 Patient Centred Radiation Therapy Advanced Practice, featuring lectures, tutorials, and student-led presentations delivered through distance learning arrangements.
Leong's academic interests focus on implementing novel technologies in radiation therapy environments, including image-guidance, motion management, stereotactic treatment workflows, and evidence-based practices in IGRT. He explores technology for enhancing student, practitioner, and patient education via virtual clinical environments like VERT, remote collaboration systems, and generative AI applications. Additional research covers radiation therapy toxicity management, such as vaginal adhesions and stenosis, and patient-reported outcomes. As an editorial board member of Technical Innovations & Patient Support in Radiation Oncology, he contributes to the field. Key publications include "Generative AI for patient education in cancer care: A scoping review of evaluation practices and emerging trends" (Leong & Ormsby, 2026, Technical Innovations & Patient Support in Radiation Oncology); "An evaluation of mental health first aid officer utilisation across an international, interdisciplinary oncology group" (Summerfield & Leong, 2025, Journal of Medical Radiation Sciences); "VERT, a virtual clinical environment, enhances understanding of radiation therapy concepts" (Leong et al., 2018, Journal of Medical Radiation Sciences); "A review of Image Guided Radiation Therapy in head and neck cancers" (Kearney et al., 2020, Technical Innovations & Patient Support in Radiation Oncology); "Management of radiation therapy-induced vaginal adhesions and stenosis: A New Zealand survey of current practice" (Summerfield & Leong, 2020); and "A multi-centre survey of New Zealand cancer patients' preferences for radiation treatment information" (Flockton et al., 2024). Leong co-authored reports on the ESTRO radiation therapist workshop (2024), ASPRONET online education project (2024), and AI-enhanced target delineation workflows.
