Professor Alan Cribb is affiliated with the School of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Newcastle. He earned his PhD in philosophy from the University of Manchester. His academic career began at the University of Manchester, where he served as Deputy Director of the Education and Child Studies Research Group in the Department of Epidemiology and Social Oncology and as a Fellow of the Centre for Social Ethics and Policy. In 1989, he joined King's College London as a New Blood lecturer in the School of Education, Communication and Society and a Visiting Fellow at the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics. He co-founded the Centre for Public Policy Research in 1996 and served as co-director until 2024. He holds the position of Professor of Bioethics and Education.
Alan Cribb's research specializations encompass applied philosophy in health and education policy, health services research, healthcare improvement, shared decision-making, and collaborative working. He addresses philosophical issues arising from changing cultures and models of professionalism in health and education. His academic interests include ethics in public health, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. He has published extensively in these areas and is the founding editor and former editor-in-chief of Health Care Analysis: An International Journal of Health Care Philosophy and Policy. Key publications include Navigating uncertain times: mentoring roles and dilemmas in the contemporary university (2025, with S. Gewirtz), Making ends meet: A conceptual and ethical analysis of efficiency (2024, with P. Mitchell et al.), Tackling disrespect in health care: The relevance of socio-relational equality (2024, with V.A. Entwistle and P. Mitchell), A wide vocabulary for person-centred care (2023, with P. Mitchell and V.A. Entwistle), and Leadership from below, change from within: Revitalising medical professionalism through social justice (2023, with G. Singh and J. Owens). His research has received funding from the AHRC, ESRC, Wellcome Trust, Health Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Nuffield Foundation, National Science Foundation, and Cancer Research UK. He has held visiting positions at UK and international universities, including a five-year Professorial Fellowship at the Health Foundation and Imperial College London. Cribb has worked on values and ethics for the Royal Pharmaceutical Council, served on the Board of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, and is a member of the Patient and Carer Network and the Committee on Ethical Issues in Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians.
