Dr. Alan Weiss is a Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle, Australia. As a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), he holds significant leadership roles in the field of neurostimulation and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). He chairs the College’s Section for ECT and Neurostimulation (SEN), serves as clinical director of the neurostimulation programme for the Hunter New England Local Health District, and chaired the expert committee to revise the 2010 NSW ECT Guidelines. Weiss is the foundation director of neurostimulation at two private hospitals in Newcastle and practices psychiatry at Warners Bay Private Hospital and Ramsay Clinic Lakeside. He is recognized as a leading ECT expert and contributes to psychiatry training through academic sessions at Calvary Mater Newcastle. Additionally, he is a member of the International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation and the American Psychiatric Association.
Weiss’s research specializations encompass interventional psychiatry, with a focus on ECT applications, safety, and quality improvement. He authored the book The Electroconvulsive Therapy Workbook: Clinical Applications (Routledge, 2018), providing practical guidance for clinicians. Key publications include co-authorship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists clinical practice guidelines for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT): Position statement (Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 2019); “Prescribing electroconvulsive therapy for depression: Not as simple as you think” (Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 2023); and “Facilitating routine data collection to improve clinical quality and research in Interventional Psychiatry: The CARE Network” (Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 2024). Other notable works cover electroconvulsive therapy in patients with cerebral aneurysms, appropriate imaging in inpatient psychiatry, and uninterrupted anesthesia support during ECT amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
