Dr. Alexander W. W. Brown serves as a Senior Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia at the University of Otago, Wellington, within the Division of Health Sciences. He earned his BMedSci (Hons) and MBChB from the University of Sheffield between 1997 and 2003. Brown completed surgical training in the Southwest Peninsula of the United Kingdom, followed by specialized training at several oncoplastic units in Southwest England. In 2013, he was awarded FRCS (Gen Surg) by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and placed on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register. He then pursued a two-year fellowship in breast surgery at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute in Sydney, Australia, along with fellowships in general and upper gastrointestinal surgery. Brown obtained his MS in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery from the University of East Anglia in 2016, with a dissertation on fat grafting after breast cancer surgery. Additional qualifications include FEBS (Breast) in 2014 from the European Board of Surgery and FRACS (Gen Surg) in 2019 from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Association of Breast Surgery (UK) and Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (BreastSurgANZ).
As an Oncoplastic Breast and Specialist General Surgeon at Capital & Coast District Health Board, Brown practices at Wellington Regional Hospital and BreastScreen Aotearoa, treating emergency and elective general surgery patients with a focus on breast conditions. He teaches medical students at the University of Otago, Wellington, and holds a position as Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney. Brown also serves as a CCrISP Instructor and contributes to the training and education of surgeons. Previously, as Surgical Superintendent at Westmead Hospital, he participated in governance and safety committees, contributing to improvements in patient care. His research interests encompass fat grafting, breast reconstruction, and patient safety. A notable publication is 'Adipose derived stem cell extracellular vesicles modulate primary human macrophages to an anti-inflammatory phenotype in vitro' (2023, Journal of Extracellular Vesicles), where he is listed as a co-author affiliated with the Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia, University of Otago Wellington.
