Alex Fowler is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Otago, a position he has held since 2022. He earned a Master of Science in Computer Science with First Class Honours and an A+ grade from the University of Auckland, during which he improved five quantum computing algorithms. Fowler also holds a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Pure Mathematics from the University of Auckland. Before joining the University of Otago, he worked for four years as an actuarial analyst at the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), gaining professional experience in applying mathematics, computer science, and statistics.
Fowler's research focuses on quantum computing algorithms, as evidenced by his 2017 MSc thesis titled Improved QUBO formulations for D-Wave quantum computing, submitted to the University of Auckland. This work represents his primary academic publication to date. In his teaching role, he instructs STAT 110: Statistical Methods, providing students with foundational knowledge in statistical techniques, data analysis, and probability. Additionally, he teaches STAT 115: Introduction to Biostatistics, which introduces biostatistical methods and their applications in health sciences. Fowler's diverse background enables him to deliver practical insights into statistical education drawn from both academic research and industry experience. His contributions support the department's mission in mathematics and statistics within the Division of Sciences.
