Alexander De Becker is an Associate Professor at Ghent University’s Faculty of Law and Criminology, Department of Criminology, Criminal Law and Social Law. He holds a Doctor of Laws degree and earned his PhD in 2006 with the thesis titled ‘Legal foundations of the legal status of public servants’. His career includes serving as Professor holding the Chair ‘The State as Employer’ at the University of Amsterdam and Leiden University for seven years. He has also conducted research as a visiting scholar at Oxford University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the European University Institute in Florence. At Ghent University, De Becker teaches courses such as Labour Law, Social Consultation, and The State as Employer in the Faculty of Law and Criminology, and Labour Law in Health Organisations in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
De Becker’s primary research interests center on the rights of public service employees within comparative law and international contexts, complemented by expertise in administrative law and labour law. He is the co-founder and director of the Lab for International & Interdisciplinary Social Affairs (LIISA) and is involved with the International Research Institute on Social Fraud. His key publications include co-authorship of Handboek Belgisch arbeidsrecht (2021), Synopsis van het Belgische arbeidsrecht: collectief arbeidsrecht (2020), and Statutenzakboekje overheidspersoneel 2019. Recent contributions feature the chapter ‘The Civil Service in the Netherlands’ in The Civil Service in Europe (2025), ‘Social Dialogue and Lifelong Learning: The Difficult Interplay at EU Level and National Level’ in Labour Law and Lifelong Learning (2025), and articles in Revue de Droit Social such as ‘De collectieve grondrechten bij de militairen in België’ (2023) and ‘De draagwijdte van de directe werking van artikel 6, lid 4 van het Europees Sociaal Handvest’ (2022). His work advances understanding of public sector labour dynamics across Europe.
