About Alexey

Alexey Shapiguzov is a University Researcher in the Department of Organismal and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Helsinki. He holds a Ph.D. and the title of Docent. Shapiguzov also serves as Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). His research examines photosynthesis and plant stress adaptation, with particular attention to the dual roles of mitochondria and chloroplasts as sites of energy production and as components of stress signalling networks that influence gene expression, physiology and plant development. He investigates how environmental stress activates signalling pathways involving these organelles and develops in vivo methods, such as flash-induced chlorophyll fluorescence imaging, to measure photosynthesis and respiration for stress detection.

Shapiguzov participates in the Viikki Plant Science Centre and supervises doctoral students in the Doctoral Programme in Plant Sciences and the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources. He is a project manager and principal investigator in the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in Tree Biology (TreeBio) and leads projects on imaging photosynthesis and gas exchange between chloroplasts and mitochondria. His affiliations include ongoing collaboration between the University of Helsinki and Luke, where his work contributes to understanding plant responses to changing environmental conditions.
