About Alfredo

Alfredo Martínez-Exposito is the Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies in the School of Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, at the University of Melbourne. He completed his PhD in Hispanic Literatures at Universidad de Oviedo, Spain, followed by a postdoctoral stay at Columbia University, New York. He joined the University of Melbourne in 2011 as Professor of Hispanic Studies and served as Head of the School of Languages and Linguistics from 2011 to 2016. Currently, he is Associate Dean (Diversity and Inclusion) in the Faculty of Arts and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Professor Martínez-Exposito's research specializations encompass Spanish and Latin American literature and cinema, with a focus on critical theory, gender, sexuality, the politics of the body in post-2008 cultural contexts, queer theory, critical masculinity studies, and decolonial aesthetics. His projects examine masculinity and representation across Spain and Latin America, as well as images of the nation in Spanish and Catalan cinema, developing concepts like country-image for studying cultural roots of separatism and place branding. Key publications include the monograph "Disidencia e hipernormalización: ensayos sobre sexualidad y masculinidades" (Icaria, 2021), which analyzes dissenting masculinities in Hispanic cinema and literature; "Live Flesh: The Male Body in Contemporary Spanish Cinema" (co-authored with Santiago Fouz-Hernández); "Cuestión de imagen: cine y Marca España" (2015), exploring Spain's cinematic image; "Los invisibles: Historia de la homosexualidad masculina en España, 1850-1940" (co-authored with Richard Cleminson); "Imágenes del Eros: Género, sexualidad, estética y cultura audiovisual" (2011); and "La poética de lo nuevo en el teatro de Gómez de la Serna" (1994). Other significant works feature "Queer Literature in Spain: Pathways to Normalisation" (2013) and contributions to edited volumes such as "Contemporary Latin American Cinema: Resisting Neoliberalism?". His scholarship has advanced understandings of national identity, queer cultures, and audiovisual representations in Hispanic studies.
