Dr. Allan Hernandez Chanto is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Economics at the University of Queensland, a position he has held since 2017. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Arizona State University in 2017, M.A. in Economics from Northwestern University in 2010, M.Sc. in Economics summa cum laude and B.Sc. in Economics from Universidad de Costa Rica in 2008 and 2005 respectively, and M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics cum laude from Universidad de Costa Rica in 2012. Before joining UQ, he served as Research Fellow at the Research Institute of Economic Sciences and The Observatory of Development at Universidad de Costa Rica from 2005 to 2012, and as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Departments of Economics and Mathematics at Universidad de Costa Rica during 2006-2007 and 2011-2012.
Hernandez Chanto's research specializes in microeconomics, with key interests in market and mechanism design, security design, information economics, search theory, experimental economics, auction theory, matching theory, financial frictions, and structural econometrics. His publications feature in leading journals including Journal of Economic Theory, Management Science, European Economic Review, The B.E. Journal of Theoretical Economics, and Economic Theory Bulletin. Selected works include 'Contagion management through information disclosure' (Journal of Economic Theory, 2024, with Jonas Hedlund and Carlos Oyarzún), 'Leveling the playing field for risk-averse agents in security-bid auctions' (Management Science, 2021, with Andrés Fioriti), 'The extrinsic value of low-denomination money holdings' (Economic Theory Bulletin, 2020), 'College assignment problems under constrained choice, private preferences, and risk aversion' (The B.E. Journal of Theoretical Economics, 2020), 'Bidding securities in projects with negative externalities' (European Economic Review, 2019, with Andrés Fioriti), and 'A Markov-switching approach to the study of citations in academic journals' (Journal of Informetrics, 2020, with Fernando Delbianco, Andrés Fioriti, and Fernando Tohmé). At Arizona State University, he received the Most Deserving Student Award and Teaching Excellence Award (2017), Barchillon Award for Best Progress towards Dissertation (2016), Best Comprehensive Examination Award (2014), and Academic Performance Awards (2014, 2016). He is a member of UQ's Centre for Unified Behavioural Economic Sciences, teaches microeconomic theory courses, and supervises postgraduate research in economic theory and market design.
