Dr. Alvina Atkinson is a Professor of Mathematics in the School of Science and Technology at Georgia Gwinnett College, where she has served on the faculty since July 2007. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Dillard University, Master of Arts in Mathematics from the University of Northern Iowa, and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from Auburn University. Prior to joining Georgia Gwinnett College, Dr. Atkinson taught mathematics courses at Auburn University and Fort Valley State University. A native of New Orleans, she brings a philosophy to her teaching that all students can learn, adapting to individual needs to foster success. Her research interests encompass educational technology, at-risk students, and the Algebra Project, reflecting her commitment to innovative and inclusive mathematics education.
Dr. Atkinson has demonstrated substantial leadership and service within the mathematics community. She served as Southeast Regional Vice President of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) from 2020 to 2025 and was re-elected for a two-year term. For her outstanding contributions and dedicated service during this period, she received an award of appreciation from AMATYC. She also holds positions as the Community College Representative on the board of directors of the National Association of Mathematicians and as the mathematics representative on the University System of Georgia Regent’s Council on General Education. In 2024, Dr. Atkinson was honored as a Black History Month Honoree in mathematical sciences by the Network of Minorities in Mathematical Sciences. Her scholarly work includes the co-authored publication "Student-created videos in online STEM education," published in Discover Education in 2024 with colleagues Patrice Bell, Indhira De La Rosa, Lorraine Jonassen, Vinavtee Kokil, and others. Additionally, she co-authored the lyrics for the Georgia Gwinnett College alma mater in 2010, selected by student vote and performed at every commencement since spring 2011. Through these roles and contributions, Dr. Atkinson has significantly influenced mathematics education and support for underrepresented groups in the field.
