Dr. Amanda Metcalf serves as Dean and Professor in the College of Education, Health and Human Performance at Fairmont State University. She holds a Ph.D. from West Virginia University, an M.A. from East Tennessee State University, and a B.S. from Mars Hill College. Her career at Fairmont State University includes progression from Assistant Professor of Physical Education in 2015 to Associate Professor of Physical Education by 2017, and subsequently to her current role as Dean, which she has occupied since at least 2020. In this leadership capacity, she oversees two departments offering five bachelor's programs, 16 teaching specializations, three minors, seven master's degree programs, and four graduate certification programs focused on education, health, and human performance.
Dr. Metcalf has received notable recognition for her contributions to teaching and student support. She was awarded the Innovation in Teaching Award for 2016-2017, presented by Leisa Muto, and the Excellence in Academic Advising Award for 2017-2018. These honors underscore her dedication to pedagogical innovation and academic guidance. Under her deanship, the college maintains accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and approval by the West Virginia Board of Education. It emphasizes innovative practices, technology integration, diversity, and partnerships through Professional Development Schools for field experiences, aligning programs with standards such as the West Virginia Professional Teaching Standards and InTASC. Dr. Metcalf has supported key initiatives, including the expansion of Educational Leadership Program offerings in 2021 and the national recognition of two education programs in November 2024. Her work in physical education has involved teaching wellness classes and fostering engaging learning environments for students.
