Ana Hernández is a Professor of Multilingual and Multicultural Education in the School of Education at California State University, San Marcos, where she coordinates the Bilingual Authorization Program, Dual Language Certificate, and Multicultural Specialist Certificate. She earned an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the Joint Doctoral Program offered by the University of California, San Diego, and California State University, San Marcos. Before entering higher education, Dr. Hernández spent 32 years teaching in California public schools as a bilingual and dual language educator in grades K-8. Her extensive classroom experience informs her commitment to preparing teachers for diverse classrooms through community-engaged scholarship, global networks, and equity-focused action plans.
Dr. Hernández's research centers on equitable teaching practices and cross-cultural competence in dual language education, with publications in peer-reviewed journals and edited books. Key publications include "Relating preservice teacher's bilingual teaching self‐efficacy to lesson differentiation practices for multilingual learners" (TESOL Journal, 2025, co-authored with Annette Daoud), "Enacting Asset-Based Approaches for Critically Conscious Dual Language Education Leadership Preparation" (2022), and an article on field experiences of teacher candidates during COVID-19 (Urban Education, 2021). As a founder of the Association for Two-Way and Dual Language Education (ATDLE), she served as President for four years, board member for over ten years, and was awarded for 25 years of service at the 25th National Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Conference, where she was also the keynote speaker. Dr. Hernández is a national trainer and consultant for dual language programs and contributes to bilingual teacher preparation through Global Learning Networks. With Annette Daoud, she has secured consecutive U.S. Department of Education grants totaling nearly $7.5 million, including a $3 million grant for Project CELEBRATE (2022), $2.56 million for Project ACCEPT, and $1.75 million for high school English learner instruction. These efforts have produced 172 Bilingual Authorizations awarded to students, 64 Dual Language Certificates, professional development for 132 in-service teachers, and iPad/mobile technology training for 115 families. Her honors include the CSU Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program fellowship, San Diego County Office of Education’s Innovative Video in Education (iVIE) Award, CSUSM’s Distinguished Teacher in Residence, CABE State Teacher of the Year, Two-Way CABE Teacher of the Year, and Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District Teacher of the Year.
