Ana Rangi is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow and Kairuruku Ritenga Utua in the Raukaha – Māori Health Workforce Development Unit, part of the Kōhatu Centre for Hauora Māori within the Health Sciences Division at the University of Otago. Of Ngāti Porou, Whakatōhea, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Ngāti Kuia, and Ngāti Koata descent, she manages the Socioeconomic Equity Project (EQ) in Health Sciences. Launched in 2019, the EQ project supports students from low-decile secondary schools and socioeconomic equity-eligible backgrounds in transitioning to health professions, with its inaugural professional health cohort graduating in December 2022. Ana works with diverse students to nurture their aspirations for health careers and community impact. Her contributions extend to student support initiatives, emphasizing safe academic environments for tauira.
Prior to joining the Kōhatu team in 2019, Ana served for 10 years as Divisional Kaiārahi Māori and Māori Student Support Officer in the Division of Humanities at the University of Otago. Her professional experience spans Māori development, youth transition programs, and teaching and academic support for international students. Ana has co-authored peer-reviewed publications advancing knowledge in higher education and health equity, including 'Good teaching as care in higher education' (Higher Education Research & Development, 2019, with Vivienne Anderson et al.), 'Photovoice as a research method for higher education research' (Higher Education Research & Development, 2020, with Rob Wass et al.), and 'Empowering equity: Striving for socio-economic equity in the Aotearoa New Zealand health workforce' (The Clinical Teacher, 2021, with R Thomson et al.). Through her roles, she promotes equity and hauora Māori in the health workforce.
