About Andrew

Andrew McGregor serves as Associate Professor of French Studies within the School of Languages and Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. In addition to his academic role, he holds key administrative positions including Deputy Head of School, Head of Languages, and Program Convenor for European Studies. McGregor completed his PhD in French Studies at the University of Melbourne. He previously obtained a Master's degree in Cinema Studies from the University of Paris I - Panthéon-Sorbonne and was granted a film research accreditation by the President of the Cannes International Film Festival. These qualifications underpin his expertise in cinema studies and French cultural representations.

McGregor's research centers on French, European, and World Cinema, with a primary focus on the representation and interpretation of cultural identities in film. His scholarly interests include French Cinema, the French New Wave cinema, contemporary French Cinema, and French and Francophone cinema. He authored the seminal book, Film Criticism as Cultural Fantasy: The Perpetual French Discovery of Australian Cinema (Peter Lang, 2010), which has been reviewed positively in international journals such as French Studies, Film Studies, and notably praised as a pioneering work by Film Quarterly. Currently, he is preparing a book on the filmmaker Tony Gatlif for Manchester University Press's French Film Directors series. Selected key publications include: "French cinema in exile: trans-national cultural representation in Tony Gatlif's Gadjo Dilo" (New Cinemas: Journal of Contemporary Film, 2008); "From language and culture to language as culture: An exploratory study of university student perceptions of foreign-language pedagogical reform" (The French Review, 2015); "Film criticism as cultural fantasy: the perpetual French discovery of Australian cinema" (2010); "Not dead yet: Three takes on auteurism in contemporary French and Francophone cinema" (French Cultural Studies, 2014); and "Liminal lieux de mémoire Representations of postcolonial memory in Tony Gatlif’s Exils (2004)" (2021). Furthermore, McGregor is the founding co-editor of the Film Cultures book series published by Peter Lang Academic Publishing in Oxford, contributing significantly to the field through editorial work.
