About Andy

Professor Andy Long FREng is Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive at Northumbria University, a role he has held since August 2022. In this position he provides strategic leadership to the University, chairs the University Executive, serves as a member of the Board of Governors, and represents the institution locally, nationally and internationally. Prior to joining Northumbria, he served as Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nottingham, where he led on strategy development and resource allocation. Earlier at Nottingham he was Dean and then Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering from 2011 to 2018, and he chaired the Executive Management Group for Midlands Innovation, a partnership of research-intensive universities in the region.

Professor Long holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nottingham, awarded in 1994 for research on process modelling for the manufacture of composite materials. He also earned a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of Warwick and an MSc in Computer Integrated Engineering from Loughborough University. His research focuses on the design and manufacture of polymer composites for demanding applications in the aerospace, automotive and energy sectors. He directed the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Composites and has authored or co-authored over 350 publications, including approximately 130 refereed journal papers, as well as three textbooks on polymer composites. He has supervised more than 30 successful PhD students and served as principal investigator on research grants totalling around £33 million. In 2006 he received the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Rosenhain Medal for distinguished achievement in materials science, and in 2020 he was awarded the Leslie Holliday Prize for significant contribution to the field of composite materials. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and a Chartered Engineer. He has held leadership roles including Chair of Universities for North East England and membership of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association Board, the North East Combined Authority Business and Economy Board and the Newcastle City Leadership Board.
