Associate Professor Aniruddh Deshpande holds an appointment in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He is a qualified Paediatric Urologist and Surgeon with degrees including MBBS, MCh, FRACS (Paediatric Surgery), and a PhD awarded by the University of Sydney for his doctoral thesis titled 'Urinary Bladder Disorders in Children'. His academic and clinical career centers at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, where he serves as Head of the Department of Surgery since April 2014 and Co-Head of Paediatric Urology. Previously, he worked as a Paediatric Urologist and Surgeon at John Hunter Hospital from 2015 to 2020. He is also a Senior Lecturer and founding member of the Priority Research Centre GrowUpWell at the University of Newcastle Faculty of Health and Medicine.
Deshpande's research specializations include paediatric urology, complex and refractory urinary incontinence, bladder dysfunction, recurrent urinary tract infections, urodynamics, hypospadias surgery, posterior urethral valves management, and host mucosal interactions in urinary tract diseases. He has pioneered ambulatory and non-invasive urodynamics in New South Wales and supports the multidisciplinary Urinary Incontinence Service at Westmead Children’s Hospital. His publication record comprises over 50 peer-reviewed articles in high-ranking paediatric, surgical, and urological journals, with an H-index of 15 and over 1,200 citations. Key publications include 'Factors Influencing Quality of Life in Children With Urinary Incontinence' (2011), 'Current strategies to predict and manage sequelae of posterior urethral valves in children' (2017), 'The microbiome and host mucosal interactions in urinary tract diseases' (2021), and 'Optimising the management of children with concomitant bladder dysfunction and behavioural disorders' (2022). He has secured multiple research grants, including an NHMRC Ideas Grant and a Hunter Children’s Research Foundation grant. Deshpande supervises three PhD students, serves as Contact Editor for the Cochrane Collaboration Incontinence Review Group, and contributes to editorial boards such as Frontiers in Urology Paediatric Adolescent and Developmental section. Awards include the Young Investigator Award from Children’s Hospital at Westmead (2007), Best Poster in Minimally Invasive Surgery at IAPSCON (2015), and gold medals in Surgery (postgraduate) and Pharmacology (undergraduate) in 1999. He has delivered invited lectures at events including the Continence Foundation of Australia and Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand.
