Dr. Lucas Moreira dos Anjos Santos is a Lecturer in Intercultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts at Monash University, serving at the Monash Intercultural Lab within the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics. Hailing from Brazil, he brings over a decade of experience teaching English as an additional language and English for academic purposes in language schools. In 2012, he relocated to Australia and earned his PhD in Education from Monash University, with research on the digital practices and culturally shaped aspirations of young Brazilians. His career at Monash focuses on fostering intercultural capabilities for interpersonal and professional interactions.
Santos's research intersects Cultural Studies, Sociology of Sport, and Intercultural Studies, examining the social construction and enactment of difference in diverse contexts. Key areas include equity, diversity, and inclusion in sports—such as racism in the Australian Football League, migration-driven changes in cricket cultures, and practical strategies for multicultural teams. He leads funded projects like "Multicultural communities' communication preferences" (2025-2026), "Engaging in intercultural dialogue to address global challenges" (2023-2024), and "Intercultural Competence in Translation and Interpreting training and testing" (2023-2024). In education, he co-teaches units on managing multicultural teams and intercultural leadership. Notable publications comprise "Does internationalisation at a distance democratise student mobility? Critical insights from the Asia-Pacific region" (2024, with J. Breaden et al., British Journal of Educational Technology), "How can multicultural cricket teams thrive? Practical strategies for players, team leaders, parents, and cricket administrators" (2025, with K. File et al.), and "Cancelled: how the cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games signalled a shift in Australian Sport" (2025, with S. Duncan et al., Sporting Traditions). Externally, he co-chaired the Equity and Inclusion Community Consultation Group for Sport and Recreation Victoria (2023-2024) and serves on the Advisory Board of the Sport & Society Research Network. He has presented invited lectures and conducted visiting research at Toronto Metropolitan University.
