Ann-Shyn Chiang is the President of China Medical University in Taiwan, a position he has held since 2025, and serves as Adjunct Distinguished Chair Professor in the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medical Science since 2016. He earned a B.S. in Entomology from National Chung Hsing University in 1981, an M.S. in Plant Pathology and Entomology from National Taiwan University in 1983, and a Ph.D. in Entomology from Rutgers University in 1990, where he also completed postdoctoral training until 1992. Joining National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) as an associate professor in 1992, he was promoted to full professor in 1997. At NTHU, he has directed the Brain Research Center since 2004, served as Director of the Institute of Biotechnology from 2002 to 2008, and was Dean of the College of Life Science from 2014 to 2020. He holds the Tsing Hua Distinguished Chair Professorship at NTHU and numerous adjunct positions, including Adjunct Chair Professor at Kaohsiung Medical University since 2014 and International Faculty at the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind, University of California, San Diego, since 2011.
Chiang's research specializes in connectomics, behavioral neurogenetics, and bioimaging, pioneering high-resolution three-dimensional reconstruction of brain-wide wiring networks in Drosophila at single-cell resolution. Notable publications include 'Three-dimensional reconstruction of brain-wide wiring networks in Drosophila at single cell resolution' (Current Biology, 2011), 'Visualizing long-term memory formation in two neurons of the Drosophila brain' (Science, 2012), 'Parallel neural pathways mediate CO2 avoidance responses in Drosophila' (Science, 2013), and 'Connectomics-based analysis of information flow in the Drosophila brain' (Current Biology, 2015). His work has advanced understanding of neural circuits underlying memory, olfaction, and sensory processing. Chiang is an Academician of Academia Sinica since 2014, recipient of the TWAS Prize in Biology (2012) and TWAS Fellow (2016), National Professorship from the Ministry of Education (2015), and multiple Outstanding Research Awards from the National Science Council (2013, 2010, 2004). He has contributed as Scientific Advisory Board member for the Center for Brain Activity Mapping at UCSD and Cold Spring Harbor Conferences Asia since 2013.
