Ann Tarca, PhD, FCA, is Emeritus Professor in the UWA Business School at the University of Western Australia. She earned her PhD in accounting from UWA and is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Tarca joined UWA in 1996 as an associate lecturer and advanced through the ranks to senior lecturer, associate professor, and full professor in 2011. She served as Deputy Head of Department from 2006 to 2012 and Head of the Accounting and Finance Discipline Group from 2012. With over 25 years of teaching experience, she has contributed to teaching and learning practices and served as Academic Fellow for the IFRS Foundation Education Initiative in London during 2011-2012. She has also served on the Education Committee of the American Accounting Association.
Tarca's research focuses on financial reporting standards, regulation, and practice, with particular emphasis on international accounting standards, IFRS adoption, enforcement, and economic consequences. Her work has been published in leading journals such as Accounting and Finance, Journal of Contemporary Accounting and Economics, and International Journal of Auditing. Key publications include lead authorship of the textbook Accounting Theory (7th Edition, Wiley, 2010) and contributions to IASB research papers, including Post-implementation Review of IFRS 3 Business Combinations (2014) and Post-implementation Review of IFRS 8 Operating Segments (2013). Her research has garnered over 6,000 citations on Google Scholar. Tarca has been an editorial board member of three Australian and two international journals. She held leadership roles including board member of the European Accounting Association, member of the International Association for Accounting Education and Research, and various committees of the International Group of the American Accounting Association. Externally, she was a member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board from 2014 to 2017, its Research Director in 2017, Chair of the AASB Academic Advisory Panel, and member of the International Accounting Standards Board from 2017 to 2025. She received the joint AFAANZ Outstanding Contribution to Accounting and Finance Practice Award in 2018 and an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Gallen for achievements in international accounting.
