Annie Chou, Ph.D., is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), specializing in Education. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy in teacher education from UNLV in May 2022, with a dissertation entitled "Examining the Attitudes of Preservice Teachers toward English Learners," advised by Shaoan Zhang. This study surveyed 162 undergraduate preservice teachers, revealing generally positive attitudes toward English learners and their inclusion in mainstream classrooms, with some variations by degree program. Earlier, she earned her Master of Arts and teaching credentials in teaching English to speakers of other languages from Eastern Mennonite University.
Before her faculty appointment at UNLV, Annie Chou gained 13 years of K-12 teaching experience as an ESL and foreign languages educator in public and private schools in Taiwan, Niger, and the United States. Her research interests concentrate on enhancing outcomes for emergent bilingual students in mainstream settings, particularly through examining and addressing teachers' attitudes toward these students. Chou has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed articles that advance teacher education and support for English language learners. Notable publications include "Antecedents of Faith Integration Self-Efficacy in PreK-12 Mennonite Schools in North America" (2021, British Journal of Religious Education, with Peter D. Wiens, Andromeda Hightower, and Paul J. Yoder), "Constructivist or Christian: A Mixed-Methods Examination of Teacher Purposes and Practices at Mennonite Schools" (2021, with Paul J. Yoder and Peter D. Wiens), "Teacher-Student Conferences for Improving Adult ELL Students’ Confidence to Write" (2020, with Peter D. Wiens), "New Teacher Mentoring and Teacher Retention: Examining the Peer Assistance and Review Program" (2019, with Peter D. Wiens, David Vallett, April Smith, and Billa Anassour), and "Teacher Training and Teaching Practice: The Case of Niger's English as a Foreign Language Teachers" (2019, with Peter D. Wiens, Elena Andrei, April Smith, and Billa Anassour). These works explore teacher self-efficacy, mentoring, pedagogical strategies, and preparation in international and faith-based contexts.
