Professor Anthony Butler is Professor of Radiology and Head of the Department of Radiology at the University of Otago, Christchurch, within the Faculty of Medicine, Division of Health Sciences. He is also Professor and Head of Section in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and Director of the Centre for Bioengineering. Holding qualifications of MBChB from the University of Otago (1994-1998), PhD from the University of Canterbury (2002-2006), GradDipSc, and FRANZCR, Butler has trained in both medicine and physics. His career includes roles as a clinical radiologist at the Canterbury District Health Board and Professor of Radiology at the University of Otago since 2007. In 2007, he co-founded MARS Bioimaging Ltd, where he serves as Chief Medical Officer and leads the medical program.
Butler's research lies at the interface of clinical medicine, physics, and computing, specializing in radiology, medical imaging physics, and the development of spectral photon-counting CT technologies. He leads the MARS research program, translating high-energy physics innovations like particle detectors into clinical tools for 3D colour X-ray imaging. Applications target heart disease, cancer, bone health, drug development, radiation dosimetry, image analysis, and data visualization. With 116 publications and over 12,000 citations, key works include "Clinical applications of MARS spectral photon-counting CT" (2025), "Deep few-view high-resolution photon-counting CT at halved dose for extremity imaging" (2025), and "Targeted K-edge nanoprobes from praseodymium and hafnium for ratiometric tracking of dual biomarkers using spectral photon counting CT" (2024). He has received over 10 research awards, including from the Royal Society of New Zealand, and contributes to CERN projects. His efforts have commercialized MARS technology for clinical use.
